Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
